Daddy's Girl

"It's a girl", they said

And his joy slipped a notch

He'd wanted a boy

What father wouldn't

As the years went by

He taught her all he knew

All he would have taught a son

And she learned it all

But she was just a girl

And a daughter could never equal a son

He'd been robbed by fate

No matter that she mastered it all

No matter that she yearned to please him Or that she excelled in all things taught her No matter that she was better than most

She was always just a girl

She did her best, she gave her all

But fate had robbed her, too

Her best was never good enough

She was never more than Daddy's girl
