“Will you take the damned spectacles off the dog!?!” Carmen yelled at Lily. “It was bad enough that you took Benji sky diving last week, but now he's wearing those things day and night.”
“I can't help it,” Lily pleaded. The dog came up to her knee and nuzzled her, apparently unconcerned about his current eyewear. He looked over at Carmen and stuck his tongue out while Lily scratched him behind the ear.
“You do know that it's bad for his eyes.” Carmen lifted one finger in the air, touching it with the forefinger of her other hand.
“I know.”
“And that it's cutting down his vision.” Carmen held up her second finger.
“I know.”
“Let alone any infection that may develop there.” Carmen's third finger rose.
“I know.”
“Then why is he still wearing them?”
“Because he won't let me take them off.” To illustrate her point, Lily reached for the goggles and Benji shook his head.
“Oh, for heaven's sake…” Carmen reached toward the dog but Lily stopped her.
“Don't do that!” Lily whispered harshly.
“And why not?”
“Next week I want him to wear a scarf and beanie.”
