The blonde leaned closer to the railing. She wrapped her arms around the toddler a little more tightly as they watched the big ship ease into port. The guns had startled her when the salute began and had briefly made the child cry before her joy-filled smile had made him laugh again.
She hugged him and whispered, "Mama's home, pet. She's home and she promised not to leave us again."
"Mama home? Mama back from war? Mummy no cry 'gain?"
"No, pet, mummy no cry ever again."
