Chapter 46

Sami watched on as her sister cushioned her cheek against Zack’s chest while they danced, she felt at peace that Donna had grown closer to him, her best friend. She wouldn't admit it to anyone, but her hand had been throbbing for most of the night. She rested it gently into her other palm, wincing lightly before looking over at her parents with Gwen and Arthur who looked like they were having a good time as they danced with everyone. Laughter and joyful voices filled the room, and she too was admittedly enjoying herself. She hadn't spoken to Katelyn much but that was to be expected, Jordan had been shadowing her and when she wasn't, she was what seemed to be brown nosing Arthur, at one-point Gwen made a comment to her regarding the woman's relentless ass kissing toward her husband, soon asking Sami was she sure Jordan was a lesbian.

Katelyn draped her father’s suit jacket over her shoulders as she walked toward Sami sitting on the side of the stage as the DJ played, oblivious to everything but her thoughts. Pressing her hand on the edge, she leapt onto the stage perching on the edge next to Sami before resting her father’s jacket over her knees. Leaning back on her palms, she swung her legs back and forth, watching on at the guests enjoying themselves. Soon noticing Sami leaning her head back and looking at her with a warm, tired smile,

"How's the hand?" Katelyn asked noticing her holding it.

"It's all good...I'll be able to take this thing off in a few days," lied Sami.

"And now the truth please?" Asked an amused Katelyn.

Sami grinned before whispering, "It hurts like a bitch."

Katelyn giggled at the admittance.

"Where's Jordan?" Sami asked, looking around.

Katelyn let out a relaxed sigh, "She had to go home, she has to be in work early."

Sami nodded, "I was getting tired of watching her kiss your father’s ass all over this place."

Katelyn smacked Sami's arm, surprised but nonetheless amused,

"I'm just saying," said a smirking Sami.

"Did you and my father have a good talk?"

Sami nodded as she turned to her,

"Actually...we did."

Sami's surprised expression amusing Katelyn more.

"Good..." she whispered turning her smile and stare to Donna and Zack.

"He really likes your sister; you know?" Sami nodded as her gaze moved to them,

"You know he won't ask her out because of that oath."

Sami laughed shaking her head, "That oath seemed like such a damn good idea at the time. Now being acquainted with my sister it's shooting him in the foot, huh?"

"Maybe you should give him a pass..."

Sami looked over her shoulder at Katelyn, mesmerized as her long lashes were still unable to prevent her eyes from glistening under the sparkling chandelier lighting,

“I’ll think about it.”

Katelyn smiled, shaking her head,

“I had the honor of talking to your parents earlier…”

Sami groaned. “Oh yeah? Whatever they said, I plead the fifth.”

Katelyn tucked her chin, laughing. “They’re very nice people…your father is definitely a character. He and my father were cracking jokes while our mothers rolled their eyes. It felt like I was in the presence of a much older you and Zack.”

Sami smirked. “Yeah, my dad…good guy.”

Katelyn nodded. So, we never really spoke about what happened the other morning at the park, our fight.” Katelyn immediately began biting the inside of her cheek as a nervousness exploded inside,

“Is there anything more we need to say?” Sami asked quietly,

“I guess not…” Katelyn whispered her reply,

“I…maybe said some things that I could have…maybe not said and I’m sorry for that.” Sami’s admittance causing Katelyn to catch her soft stare,

“We were both…tired and angry and…certainly frustrated. I wish things could have been different…”

“Everything I said…regarding how I felt about you…,” stated Sami before she broke their stare,

“Don’t Sam…I can’t hear it...”

“Just know I’m trying every day to fight it…to fight you.”

Katelyn shut her eyes tightly together, Sami’s words caused her heart to jolt, they were exactly what her heart wanted to hear, but certainly not what her head needed to,

“I hate that in an instance you can cripple me…”

“I don’t mean too…”

“I know…”

"Dance with me," Sami whispered, making sure Katelyn knew she wasn't asking, but demanding it. The light demand caught Katelyn off guard as her heart leapt back into her throat. She turned to Sami her surprised expression pulling a smirk from her,

"Just a dance, let your guard down...what's five minutes?"

They both knew a lot could happen within that time, but all Sami wanted was to just hold her and all Katelyn wanted was to be held by her, she broke their gaze to look at her mother and father relaxing,

"Don't worry, I'll behave."

"Don't act like you know the definition of that word."

Sami winked as she held her strapped hand out to Katelyn, trying desperately to not express the stabbing pain,

Katelyn smiled shyly feeling herself blush. Right then giving into the temptation of the woman, she stood up grabbing Sami's un-harmed hand, letting it gently pull her off the stage. Sami led her to the small dance floor that had all now but three couples’ dancing.

Katelyn lightly slid her soft fingers between the warmth of Sami's... Their touching skin weakening her knees in an instant. She rested her head against Sami's chest listening to the throbbing sounds of the woman's heart quicken, simultaneously matching hers. She bit down on her bottom lip as a smile escaped. Their bodies instantly melting together. It felt so good to let go of all her worries even just for a few moments.

All Sami could do was rest her head on Katelyn's and close her eyes. After the months of pent up frustration's left her, Sami was right where she needed and wanted to be. Her hunger and desire for the woman settled as she finally held her against her, they both knew all eyes would be on them but at that moment not a care was given by either of them, whatever issues they had, had been forgotten both being too consumed by one another. The bliss of it all just enhancing their addiction.

Sami slowly spread her fingers across the small of Katelyn's back, she didn't care for the sharp pains that rushed through her hand, all she wanted was her fingers to trace the body of the woman she ached for. Katelyn let out a whispered moan as Sami's pads pressed against her bare skin, she swallowed hard, and tightly clamped her eyes shut. Katelyn's whispered moan fueled Sami’s fire, causing her body to ache for more. Katelyn wanted nothing more than to feel Sami's fingers caress her body, and slowly she pressed their bodies closer, raising her head to intentionally lock in Sami's gaze. The two women's eyes slowly traced almost caressed one another’s lips, both witnessing the watering of their mouth's as their lips glistened under the soft lighting then back to watch the slow dueling stare. Katelyn could see the struggle move over Sami's eyes, and she too, struggled. Slowly Sami broke the gaze brushing her cheek against Katelyn's, and lightly she pressed her lips against the soft ear,

"Behave..." Sami whispered.

Katelyn quickly clenched her eyes shut once again as Sami's whisper nearly forced another whispered moan to escape her now heavy breaths. All she wanted to do was run her nails down the neck of Sami, she wanted Sami's taste on her lips and tongue. Sami's cologne did nothing but intoxicate her. Right at that moment as the woman's soft breaths traced the edges of her ear, neither of them could break their hold, they were too consumed by one another. She brushed her cheek away from Sami's, their eyes again, resting on one another. Sami swallowed hard as she watched Katelyn's bottom lip slide in-between her teeth, purposely intending to send Sami into a spiral. The fuel of their hunger, want, need and desire igniting the nearly impossible task of resisting the sweet temptation of each other. Katelyn watched as the dark eyes spoke only love to her, remembering Theresa never receiving that when she watched them at the skate party, her heart suddenly swelling.

Gwen gripped Arthur's arm as she watched her eldest daughter embrace Sami. She was no fool. A smile moved across her face as she watched the two women trying with all their mite to fight with their morals and hearts. Arthur gently placed his hand on top of hers, as he followed her stare toward the two women on the dance floor. He swallowed hard and watched the intensity of the love he knew his daughter felt for Sami as her eyes studied the woman's in front of her. That was all the confirmation he needed to accept Sami.

"The heart wants what the heart wants," he whispered to his wife.

"You're dangerous Sami Wilson..." Katelyn whispered,

"Let me prove you wrong..."

Sami swallowed hard, her heart throbbed into her throat, her eyes dropped to Katelyn's lips. She watched her tongue reveal itself behind her teeth as it slowly traced her bottom lip. Sami closed her eyes, fighting... She had to.

Katelyn placed her hand to gently rest her palm against Sami's chest a weak attempt to put some space between them, she knew. Sami’s darkened eyes mirrored the love she felt. Slowly Katelyn moved in closer, leaving little space between their lips, she couldn't fight... Even taking into regard of knowing Zack was only feet away, the little bit of self-control she had… Was gone... Katelyn let her heart take her where she needed to be. Sami took in a deep breath her eyes submitting, she knew what was about to happen. The ache was too much, her love, the want just couldn't be prevented any longer...

Suddenly the two women were interrupted by a whispering Nicole, breaking Katelyn out of her trance with a worried expression painted all over her sister’s face,

"Um guys..." Nicole's eyes wide, "You can't, not here... God trust you both to pick now to come to your senses. I think it's time Katelyn and I go and get some fresh air."

Katelyn slowly slid from Sami's clutch, she cleared her throat, biting her lip.

Sami clenched her jaw, taking in a deep breath as she watched Katelyn being led from her,

"Don't doubt me, Kate..."

Katelyn gripped her sister's hand before stopping in her tracks, Sami's words sewed her heart together, she believed her... Sami loved her... She... Loved her. Katelyn turned to Sami, swallowing softly, she pressed her fingertips against the side of her neck, as she stared at Sami standing with her hands in her pockets, staring back, the love bursting through as her jaw clenched. It took everything for Katelyn to muster up the strength to stop herself from running back and pressing her lips tightly against the lips her body ached to feel. Her brother would never forgive them. Katelyn's small tear played against her lashes as she bit the inside of her cheek. Before she knew it, she pulled from Nicole’s hold.

Sami's eyes widened as she observed the desire fueled eyes coming closer, she swallowed hard taking her hands out of her pockets.

Katelyn's eyes moved from Sami, to her brother who was distracted by Donna. Moving her gaze back to Sami's she gently cupped the soft jaw in her palm, her eyes furiously tracing back and forth over Sami's,

“Kate… Don’t…” Sami’s soft whisper causing Katelyn to clamp her eyes shut,

“I know… But I need you to know, I don’t doubt you anymore. You told me my eyes tell you more than I know… Your eyes… Your actions… Your words...have showed me more than I need to know,” Katelyn paused as Sami's gaze weakened to her words, "But…we both know Zack's happiness comes first." Katelyn became breathless as the ache from her heart winded her.

Sami clenched her jaw nodding slowly.

"I wish things could have been different…" she whispered her painful sentence.

Sami cleared her throbbing throat, “You better go.”

Chapter 47

"Katelyn just text me back, she gets out of the office around four, she said just to meet her there," said Zack before shoving his phone back in his pocket and going back to mopping the parlor floor.

Business had been booming the last several weeks, word that Sami's fracture had healed spread like wild fire and it was business as usual. Between the early mornings at the parlor and the late-night bar work for Mick, Sami was burned out not that she admitted it to anyone. Persisting to fit in as many clients during the day. Every now and again she’d be forced to ignore the shooting pain that pierced through her hand after so many hours with the tattoo machine, but Zack and Billy needed her, and she needed to tattoo so she did what she did best and kept her mouth shut.

Katelyn finally found a two-bedroom apartment, it wasn’t cheap, but she fell in love with the open plan kitchen and vaulted ceilings, she just had to have it. Her dates with Jordan were becoming less like dates and more of just hanging out. She was a refreshing break from the constant thoughts of Sami. She would keep Katelyn company, even bring her food to the office at two a.m. when she sat behind her desk working her cases, and for hours they would just sit and talk about work. She catered to her and occasionally, shamelessly flirt but to no avail.

Katelyn and Sami’s distance from one another was nothing out of the ordinary, they would exchange lengthy gazes here and there. But they tried to keep the burning ache to a minimal, avoiding one another at any given opportunity. It was the only way to keep their sanity, they agreed.

"Okay, I might be a little late to help, I think Mick needs me for a few hours," replied Sami as she applied a fresh outline onto the arm of her last client for that day.

"Nope, Tara has it covered tonight you aren’t getting out of it that easy. We need your truck anyway."

Sami looked up at Zack as he watched her work with a grin from ear to ear. She sighed, painfully aware that she would have to endure another night of Katelyn and Jordan being right by her side. She wanted to be the one standing were Jordan was. Sami was never one to enjoy painting a fake smile and force a conversation but for the sake of everyone, she had to.

"Well then I guess we’re meeting her there," Sami said dryly.

"Good! Donna is going to be there before us, so we won’t need to pick her up," explained Zack.

Sami was relieved to hear her sister who had bloomed in the little town was going to be there. She worked for Mick during the night and had a morning shift at the bakery now that Cindy was gone for maternity leave with her first child. Sami was happy to see her sister full of life and laughter, even the weekly dinner arrangements with their parents, seemed to be more at ease, Sami’s guilt over what happened lightened. It soothed her to know her mother and father were worrying less and finding time for themselves, every week she would listen to her mother explain what kind of fish she caught and how much it weighed when her father would take her out on the boat. The enthusiasm from her mother’s voice had taken a huge weight of worry off Sami.

Katelyn finished packing the last box before writing "Kitchen" on the side. She stared at her watch as she bit the inside of her cheek, it was six thirty and still no sign of Zack and Sami.

Donna was upstairs grabbing the last bit of clothing from the beautiful mahogany wardrobe Richard had surprised Katelyn with, which also had to be removed. She walked down the spiral staircase noticing the stressed body language of Katelyn as Jordan held her,

"Okay guys, grab some boxes. I’ve put the seats back in my car, we can fit these clothes and I'd say four more boxes from the kitchen," stated Donna reaching the bottom of the stairs.

"Where the hell are these guys? I told Zack I would be out at four he told me they would be here. I need to move my desk, chair and wardrobe and they will never fit in any of our vehicles, only Sami's," explained an irritated Katelyn as she broke her friendly embrace with Jordan.

"Sweetie, they will be here, let’s face it they aren’t the timeliest individuals you know," Jordan said trying to calm her. Katelyn slightly grimaced as Donna’s eyebrow arched at the ignorant comment about her sister,

"Well it’s hard to manage your own business and I do know they were booked up today, I’ll text Sami and see what’s going on. Let’s just get some of these boxes out of the way and make some room," announced Donna as she walked past the pair making her way out to the gravel driveway.

"Ah ha! Here they are!" Yelled Donna as Sami’s truck approached.

Zack waved out of the window as Sami stopped. He jumped out rushing to Donna while she struggled to keep the expensive business suits from slipping onto the gravel. Sami quickly rubbed her face, trying to ease the tiredness that was nearly getting the better of her.

"Is she mad we’re so late?" Zack asked, grabbing some of the suits from Donna.

"She’s just stressed, but yeah she might yell," said a smirking Donna as she opened her already jam-packed trunk before placing the Jackets inside.

Sami made her way toward her sister, placing a kiss on her cheek,

"Hey sis, how you doing?" Sami asked.

Donna puckered her lips placing a sympathetic expression across her face,

"You look so tired," explained Donna as she wrapped her arms around her, hugging her.

"No, no I’m good. I just need to refuel with some coffee and I’ll be good to go," replied Sami, breaking their hug before the three began making their way back into the house.

"Thank God! Where the hell have you guys been?" A relieved but clearly annoyed Katelyn asked.

Sami placed her pointer finger and thumb on the bridge of her nose squeezing tightly as her lingering headache worsened. Katelyn soon noticed how tired she looked, her complexion was pale, her eyes dark again.

"That’s my fault I forgot about our five o’clock bookings, have you got any coffee and ibuprofen?" Sami asked.

Katelyn nodded, "Yeah I have some in the kitchen, come follow me," said Katelyn her voice softening.

"We will get the rest of these boxes put in Sami’s truck before we start with the big stuff," claimed Zack placing a box on top of another.

Katelyn turned to her brother nodding with a small smile thanking him.

Sami sat on the stool by the breakfast bar still pinching the bridge of her nose.

"You look tired, I hope Mick isn’t working you too hard," stated Katelyn grabbing the pain pills from the cupboard above her old porcelain kitchen sink.

Sami shook her head, "Not at all, the parlor has been non-stop recently and the bar hasn't been any quieter either. I guess I just need a good night sleep."

Katelyn placed two pills into the palm of her hand and slid a cup of strong black coffee in front of her, pressing her hip against the bar and crossing her arms to stare at the tired body in front of her,

"You should be having a good night sleep every night. How's the hand holding up?" Asked Katelyn pushing off the counter to tape a box of plates shut.

"I will when it slows down, keeping busy makes you forget you’re tired and the hand is all good," said Sami before popping the pills into her mouth and taking a sip of the necessary coffee.

"Ah, always...hits the spot. I just needed some refuel and this magical liquid is just the thing to do it." A smile settled across her face.

"Have you eaten today? Your hand is all good huh?" A curious Katelyn asked admittedly concerned for her,

"Yeah, Laurie brought us some sandwiches from her dad's sub joint today," answered Sami purposely ignoring the question about her hand just as Donna walked in.

Katelyn dropped her gaze as she attempted to cover up her jealousy of Laurie,

"How is your friend, Laurie?" she asked clearing her throat.

Sami took another sip from her coffee, nodding her head slowly as she mixed the blissful coffee around her tongue,

"She's good. She's dating the girl who does my hair at the barber shop. Pretty sure I just made it to part-time matchmaker."

Katelyn couldn't help the relieved smile that escaped her,

"Oh, you set her up with your barber?"

"Yes ma'am. She's a real cool chick and she's been crushing on Laurie for months, apparently."

"Well that doesn't technically make you a matchmaker," Katelyn replied scrunching her nose rewarding Sami's efforts with a cheeky smile.

Sami smirked unable to ignore the magnifying arousal Katelyn's sassy seductive gaze did to her regardless how exhausted she was.

"Okay Katie, that’s all the boxes in the back of Sami’s truck and your chair. My car is full, there are a few boxes in here, but I can take those in my car when we come back to get the bigger stuff."

"Thank you so much Don, I can’t wait for this move to be over. You guys just follow me and Jordan," stated Katelyn as Sami quickly downed her coffee before getting up from the stool.

Katelyn lightly rubbed Sami’s stomach while walking past her,

"You should really have three meals a day not just one," Katelyn instantly forgot herself before quickly pulling her hand from Sami.

"Oh, I’m sorr--" Sami interrupted Katelyn’s approaching apology with a smirk,

"Behave Katelyn…we have things to do."

Katelyn’s eyes widened, "I didn't mean it like that," she yelled toward Sami,

Sami turned pressing her finger against her lips stating for Katelyn to be quiet,

"We have company...maybe later," finished Sami followed by a wink, and grin. The grin always caught Katelyn… Melted her. Fighting its effects was pointless she knew so instead she rolled her eyes and followed them out of the house.

Chapter 48

Jordan rode with Katelyn as they made their way to her new apartment, Katelyn’s eyes glanced to her mirror to catch a glimpse of Sami driving behind her. She bit her bottom lip as the thought of her hand on Sami’s stomach enthralled her, and in an instant, it sent a wave of longing and desire throughout her entire body, well until Jordan’s hand slid onto her thigh breaking her train of thought,

"I’m glad you found a place, I know what kind of stress you've been under recently," stated Jordan smiling in Katelyn’s direction.

She forced a small smile before glancing down to the hand that lightly rubbed her thigh, she felt a warmth grow between her thigh's as a flash thought of it being Sami's soft touch on her. She shifted in her seat attempting to shake off the inappropriate fantasy that had seemingly consumed her out of nowhere. Christ.

Katelyn pulled up to the small apartment complex, she loved that it was hidden from the road, the view from her windows was nothing but mountain tops and spruce trees all around. She admitted she was nervous carrying everything up to the third floor but, it was her new home, that she was going to be paying for every month. It felt liberating to know daddy didn’t help pay for it.

Sami backed her truck into the parking space next to Katelyn’s before getting out, she walked to the back of her truck un-hinging the back gate. Katelyn got out of her car walking to the back of it to open the trunk. It was filled with reinforced boxes of months of cases and almost endless piles of law books she made sure to put in alphabetical order.

"Okay, so I have some bad news and please don’t freak out," pleaded Katelyn as she ran her fingers through her loose locks. Sami inhaled deeply, apprehensive to Katelyn’s approaching admittance,

"My apartment is on the third floor," she said quietly before turning away to avoid the irritated expressions from Zack and Sami,

"You’re lucky you’re my sister and since we have to haul all of this crap up three flights of stairs, you have to make us dinner," stated Zack as he slid a box from the bed of Sami’s truck.

"That’s a great idea! I can cook us all a nice meal after everything is in its place, to celebrate Katelyn’s new home. We can even invite the whole gang, maybe even your parents. I do admit I can cook a phenomenal steak to your liking!" A cheerful Jordan stated as she came up behind Katelyn wrapping her arms around her stomach hugging her tightly.

Sami raised an eyebrow as her eyes met with Katelyn’s, recognizing the force behind her smile.

"I could eat steak," stated Sami keeping her eyes locked with Katelyn’s.

"Me too!" Zack added.

Sami placed the last two boxes from her truck into the apartment, putting them on the floor she reached behind to stretch her lower back. Her hand was certainly causing her more pain than she liked to admit, and gently she massaged her palm. Katelyn unwrapped plates, debating which cupboard to put them in.

"Where do you want these? They’re unmarked," Sami asked leaning her back flat against the pristine white wall.

Katelyn turned to look at a fatigued Sami, noticing her press her fingers into her palm,

"Oh, leave them there, I'll put them in my bedroom and sort through them tonight. I sent Jordan to get us all some coffee. Are you hanging in there okay?" Katelyn asked leaving the pile of plates on the counter in the kitchen.

"Yeah I'm good."

Katelyn smiled softly as she approached Sami,

"Let me get these boxes into the room and I'll get you some more pain pills," offered Katelyn,

"No, no. I’ve got them," stated Sami, bending down to grab them.

Katelyn pushed her hands away from the top box, "Listen stubborn ass, I got it," she insisted.

Lifting the box from the top she took it to her already box filled bedroom. Her bed was due to be delivered in the morning, Katelyn knew she was going to have a long night unpacking and putting boxes out of the way for the delivery men.

"I can’t wait until everything is unpacked this place is a mess!" Expressed a dissatisfied Katelyn.

Sami watched as Katelyn bent over placing the box on her cream carpet, a smirk appearing,

"It all looks fine from where I’m standing," stated Sami lowering her voice purposely as Katelyn quickly turned to catch her looking.

"Very funny…" whispered a bashful Katelyn, before brushing past Sami at the doorway.

Suddenly she felt her hand being pulled and forced back into the room to Sami lightly pinning her against the wall. She said nothing as fingertips brushed down the cheek… There was nothing she could say; she was completely paralyzed by the soft teasing touches of the lingering fingertips that danced against her skin and slowly down the side of her neck.

Sami had to feed her hunger even if it was just for a moment. Katelyn bit her lip then let out a soft moan. Sami’s soft touches overwhelmed her arousal. Her body began trembling as the temptation to press her lips against Sami’s caught her again. Katelyn watched as Sami’s desire fueled gaze moved to her lips, again she felt her mouth filling, her hunger spilling onto the tip of her tongue. Their breaths becoming ever more frenzied. Katelyn slowly pressed her hand against Sami’s chest before tracing the tip of her thumb softly across the bottom lip that her mouth hungered to press against... Once more she felt the pounding of Sami’s heart match her own. God, I can't keep doing this to myself. The intensified desire was suddenly interrupted by the sound of the front door as it opened, followed by the giggles of Donna and Zack,

Katelyn’s eyes filled with horror she quickly broke their hungered gaze but still finding herself unable to push Sami away. She bit down lightly on her wettened bottom lip as she fought the temptation that was Sami,

"Sami…please. We can't," whispered a breathless Katelyn.

Sami pushed herself off Katelyn just enough for Katelyn to move past her,

"This is killing me..." Sami whispered back, her dark eyes burning into Katelyn’s heart,

"You're killing me..." whispered Katelyn as she turned away and made her way down the lit-up hall, quickly straightening herself and calming her now frenzied curls. She returned to the living room to a confused looking Zack and Donna,

"Hey where were you? And why do you look flustered?" Asked an out of breath Zack as he slid down the wall to guide him to the floor.

Katelyn quickly glanced at Donna then back to Zack,

"Huh? Flustered?" Katelyn asked unable to answer properly, running her hands through her hair. Her thoughts were blocked by Sami’s previous pin as she tried to control her trembling body and frenzied breaths.

"Yeah, your cheeks are all red," stated Zack opening a bag of peanuts and offering Donna some as she sat down beside him.

"We were just moving some boxes to try and make room for the delivery guys coming tomorrow with her bed. Your sister isn't a light packer," replied Sami as she approached them rubbing her palm.

Katelyn swallowed hard thankful for Sami’s quick response just as Jordan walked through the door bestowing large coffees to them. Katelyn smiled as she grabbed her coffee from the holder, thanking her before moving to the kitchen to grab the pain pills. For a split moment, her body went limp, she grabbed onto the edge of her kitchen counter, her body still trembling, her weakened knees making it harder to stand. Jordan walked in noticing Katelyn’s weak stature, quickly she grabbed her waist to support her,

"Are you okay?" A panicked Jordan asked.

Katelyn waved Jordan away as she hung her head over the sink, while her body throbbed for it to be Sami’s grip on her waist. She had never yearned so badly to be touched.

"I’m fine, I’m just…" Katelyn threw her head back releasing a frustrated moan, "Tired...Sami I have...some pills here for you," Katelyn finished, leaning her back against the counter as she bit her bottom lip and locked her seductive gaze back onto the instigator of it all.

Sami turned instantly as the frustrated moan of Katelyn echoed through her ears. She caught the woman's stare, her heart pounded forcing it to leap into her throat, right then Sami grasped that she had just lit a fire that Katelyn now struggled to control in front of the others. She cleared her throat making her way toward the kitchen, she stared into the trembling palm. Slowly her gaze met an intensified one, lightly Sami brushed the tips of her fingers against Katelyn's palm as she took the pills. She couldn't help but revel in the woman’s reaction to her. Katelyn bit down on her lip purposely triggering Sami's eyes to present a weakened roll clarifying the teasing affected her. Quickly Sami broke away from Katelyn’s locked gaze, the aching want that shot through her immediately became too much for her to resist,

"You're playing with fire if you keep that up," Sami whispered.

Katelyn swallowed hard as her heavy breaths released a faint moan,

"Don't tease..." Katelyn replied softly unable to stop herself from feeding into the teasing.

Sami cleared her throat to Katelyn's shameful flirt.

"I think we should pick this back up tomorrow, everybody is tired," explained Jordan, placing herself on one of the boxes in the living room.

Katelyn snapped out of her trance as Jordan’s voice hit her ears. She took in a deep breath before grabbing her coffee on the counter and sipping it. Soon coming to the realization of how much her desire was ruling her. She knew that even being unable to do anything physically with Sami, she wanted to make sure Sami knew exactly what she was doing to her. It was that guilty pleasure that Katelyn couldn’t escape and quite frankly she didn’t want to.

"Yeah Katie, I am pretty tired, and we have an early start at the parlor tomorrow," added Zack.

Donna held her hand out to Sami as she made her way out of the kitchen,

"Pull me up Sam," she asked.

Sami did as she was asked and pulled her sister back up onto her feet. Donna arched her eyebrow as Sami met her gaze, a smirk presenting itself across Donna’s face.

"What?" Sami whispered covering her smirk with her coffee,

"Those boxes must have been oh I don’t know almost earth shattering huh?" Donna whispered sarcastically as a grin appeared.

"You’re delirious," replied Sami.

"Uh huh and you my dear sister, must think I am new," Donna countered as she straightened her jeans.

"What are you guys mumbling about?" Asked Zack as Sami helped him up off the floor.

Sami shook her head avoiding Zack’s question, instantly a stomach wrenching guilt ripped through her heavy conscience for not discussing that the feelings she held were really for his sister. A part of her wanted to tell him the other part was too afraid. She knew he would be angry that she had kept the kiss from him, although he of all people knew Sami only to fall into bed with women not fall in love with them, especially his sister. The oath that they took as they sat at Mick's had been well and truly broken.

Chapter 49

Katelyn bit her bottom lip tightly as she traced the corner of the manila envelope that landed on her desk that morning. Its contents had placed her at a fork in the road for her future. Her gut wrenched as a sadness, but a small excitement washed over her. It held everything she had ever wanted…but it also held a possible heart break with it. She knew that what was inside wouldn’t only affect her, but it would affect everyone she loved… Her disordered thoughts were abruptly interrupted,

"Um, sorry to bother you Katelyn, but Sami...sorry I mean a Miss. Wilson is here to see you, shall I let her through?" Katelyn stared over the top of her glasses, her eyebrow arching at the obvious awkward behavior of her receptionist as she poked around the door,

"Everything okay there, Candice?"

"Yes, it's just...she's the last person I'd ever expect to see here." Candice’s nervousness peaked Katelyn's interest in her knowledge of Sami,

"You know her?" She asked non-saliently as she quickly tucked the envelope holding her future in her top drawer.

"Oh...just. It's a long story. Shall I send her in?"

Katelyn nodded, raising from her seat she placed her glasses on her desk, quickly she straightened her shirt, still a little distracted at Candice’s behavior. Her thoughts rushed from her mind as the small knock flipped her stomach upside down. Sami slid from behind the door, a lazy smile masking her face,

"Not interrupting, am I?" She asked holding her hands behind her back.

Katelyn watched her eyes scan the well-kept office, sighing lightly, she moved to the front of her desk,

"Not at all and what do I owe the pleasure of your visit?" Her eyes captured at the tailored white shirt and smart black pants, the sight pleasured her more than she had expected, "I have to say you look very...smart. What's the occasion?"

Sami stared down on herself, hating how dressed up she was,

"Thanks, you look…amazing as always," She paused, smiling at the blushing woman in front of her, "Well...unfortunately I'm going to miss your birthday celebrations tomorrow, I have to go out of town for a few days, so I thought I would maybe come and see if I could take you to lunch as an early present." Sami cleared her throat as Katelyn leaned against her desk, crossing her ankles. Those toned bronzed legs triggering a smirk from Sami.

Katelyn uncrossed her arms to grip the edges of her desk. She bit regretfully on her bottom lip,

"I'm sorry, I have to go meet my father and Richard for lunch. Why do you have to go out of town?"

"I have a meeting with a new supplier and then I have to meet a guy about an upcoming tattoo convention. They are talking about holding it here, so fingers crossed I can convince them."

"Oh, wow. Well good luck, I hope it goes well. When will you be back?”

“In a few days,” replied Sami as she slowly examined the certificates on the wall,

“I…I wish I could go to lunch with you, I would really like to talk to you about something."

Sami turned back to look at her, “Everything okay?” Sami asked, her concerned stricken expression furthering Katelyn’s nervousness.

“Yes…I…never mind, I’m sure we’ll find time to talk…” Katelyn replied.

At least Sami being away would give her a few days to get her thoughts together… Go through the conversation in her head, let her anxiety rule the numerous outcomes that could come of it.

"Well, as it so happens, I anticipated that you would already have plans, so...." Sami paused, swinging her hands from behind her back to present a little white box and a fresh coffee from the bakery. Katelyn's eyes weakened to the subtle but so very thoughtful gifts in front of her, especially loving the white ribbon that wrapped over the box finished with a small bow on top.

"Oh Sam, you didn't have to get me anything." Katelyn pushed off her desk as Sami approached to give her the small gifts,

"It's not much but...I know you'll enjoy them."

Katelyn stared at the box in her hand, a small excitement crept into her throat as she stared up at Sami mischievously, "What's in it?"

"Don't open it until I leave...honestly it's not much but I think you'll like it." Sami looked down at her watch, "Okay well...seeing as my lunch date cancelled last minute to attend a boring meeting, I should probably start heading so I have time to at least find a motel room for the night."

Katelyn laughed before turning and carefully placing the coffee and small white box on her desk, she turned back to Sami.

“When you get back…you and I could do something, after all my birthdays last an entire week…”

Sami laughed, stepping slightly closer to her. “As much as I’d love to say yes…I don’t think…that would be such a great idea.”

Katelyn dropped her head. “Sorry, you’re right…” she whispered.

Sami swallowed hard before slowly bringing her lips to the soft cheek of Katelyn. Her eyes clamping shut as she fought the pound in her throat. She held her kiss right there, and before long she felt Katelyn push her cheek into her kiss.

“Sam….” Whispered Katelyn slowly.

Sami pulled her lips slightly from her cheek, her eyes still shut, she cleared her throat,

“I know…” She opened her eyes to Katelyn’s being right there. Once again pushing Sami to swallow harder.

“Okay…I need to go.”

Katelyn’s unfastened lips released a soft gentle moan as her fingertip brushed Sami’s bottom lip.

“Tell me this will get easier…”

Sami pressed her forehead against Katelyn’s, “Everyday, I wake up hoping it does…”

Katelyn nodded slightly, taking in a deep breath, "Please drive safe and text someone to let them know you made it there okay."

Sami backed up slightly, putting a safer distance between them both, "I will...have a good birthday."

Katelyn’s stare softened, she could see the disappointment in Sami's face,

"Thank you...oh, and one more thing."

"Hm?"

"How do you know Candice, my receptionist?" Katelyn's eyebrow arching as an amused expression instigated Sami's smirk before she turned on her heels,

"It was before you arrived Kate..." Sami turned to her, sending that heart-melting grin,

"Uh-huh. See you in a few days, ass." Katelyn giggled hearing Sami's laughter as she closed the door behind her.

Katelyn collapsed back onto her desk, gripping the edges and biting her lip. Every instance they had alone, they couldn’t help but show each other how the other was affected. God, did it feel good but the torture behind it was almost impossible to endure. She turned to the small white box, chewing the inside of her cheek. Dying to know what was inside. She slowly lifted it, her eyes examined it carefully before walking behind her desk, she opened the drawer… Her eyes falling on the envelope, she swallowed the sudden dread and snatched the scissors next to it. She couldn’t handle the anticipation any longer, quickly she sliced the ribbon apart, and slowly lifted the lid... Her eyes widened as a smile grew. Closing her eyes, she bit her bottom lip, her heart once again swelling. She fell into her chair, her smile causing her cheeks to ache as she carefully lifted out the beautifully glazed donut that her mouth instantly watered for. To anyone else it would've just been a glazed donut and coffee... To Katelyn it was more than that. The first real romantic gesture from Sami. She understood it, and Sami knew she would.

Sami couldn’t help the small smile covering the corner of her mouth before her eyes locked onto the baby blues of Jordan as they bumped into each other in the front lobby of Arthur’s firm,

“Ah, Sami. You’re looking very sharp. What are you doing here?”

Sami’s small smile soon disappeared. Her eyes fell on the bag from the local Italian restaurant. She brought lunch? A knot soon formed in Sami’s stomach,

“I’ll be out of town for a few days, so I thought I would come and wish Katelyn a happy birthday before I hit the road.”

“Oh, I see. It’s a shame you’ll miss what I have planned, but we’ll be sure to save you some cake.”

Jordan’s proud-of-herself smirk instantly sickening Sami, but still she forced a small smile,

“Y’all have fun.”

“Oh, we will. I’ll make sure of it. I’m hoping my persistence pays off with her. When she sees what I have planned for her she will be sure to see I’m good for her. Katelyn certainly has her walls built up, but I’ll knock them down.” Jordan’s confident smile and wink suddenly grinding on a nerve Sami wasn’t used to,

“I thought y’all decided it was just a friendship?” Sami asked, her curiosity getting the better of her,

“Katelyn agreed to that, I never said I would stop trying to pursue her. Are you kidding me? She’s fucking beautiful…excuse my French, but yeah, I have it all planned out…”

Sami cleared her throat, unable to swallow her jealousy, “You have what planned out exactly?”

“She finally has her apartment…hello? I thought you of all people would see where I’m going with this, no offence.”

“I’m still not understanding…”

“When she settles into her apartment… The unplanned late-night visits, purposefully surprising her with a take-out and wine. Being that someone who’s there in her times of need… I have it figured out. Life’s been a little hectic for her, but now it’s slowing down I’m sure she’ll no longer be blinded. She’ll see I’m perfect for her in no time.”

“Okay, well I should get going I have a long drive ahead of me.” Sami purposely sharpening her tone. The thought of someone discussing how they will pursue the one woman who got to her and she had no say whatsoever, sickened her to her very core,

“Okay, be sure to have a safe trip and we’ll see you when you get back. I’ll keep you updated,” Jordan replied with a wink,

“Mhm. Good luck,” Sami said quietly before walking away and leaving the confident Jordan standing there. She couldn’t subside the subtle painful throbs at the mere thought of Katelyn lying to her about having lunch with her father when all the while she was having lunch with Jordan. Damn.

Chapter 50

Katelyn sat back in her chair letting out a content sigh, placing her fork on her salad before pushing it across her desk,

“Thank you, Nicole. That was delicious, where did you get it?”

Nicole shrugged, still sifting through hers and lightly stabbing a cherry tomato, “That new salad bar where the old sheriff’s department used to be. Everyone at the salon has been raving about it so I thought, what the heck.”

Katelyn nodded, her smile confirming Nicole’s client’s opinions, “It was very good.”

“So, what time is your house warming dinner tomorrow night?” Nicole asked, shoving her cherry tomato against the inside of her cheek,

“I’m thinking six thirty. Mom and dad will be there, I have to call Zack and make sure he, Sami and Billy are still actually coming.”

“Leaving it a little late, aren’t we?”

“I know; can I ask you something?” Katelyn asked, noticing her quiet tone instigating Nicole’s suspicious arched eyebrow,

“Sure…”

“Have you spoken to Sam? We haven’t spoken since she got back from her trip and when we do…she’s…I don’t know. Never mind, forget I said anything.”

Nicole’s devious smile forcing Katelyn’s eyes to roll, “Stop. Forget I asked.”

“Oh, lighten up. We’ve spoken here and there; I think she’s just keeping herself busy.”

“Yes, you’re probably right…I know I shouldn’t care but…”

“I know honey; I can’t imagine it being very easy. Personally, I think you’re both being utterly stupid when it comes to Zack, I get it…but I think he would understand. Have you spoken to her about…?”

“No…not yet. I’m still in two minds…I just…” Katelyn’s hurt in her chest forced a pained sigh,

“Well, you know I hate the idea.”

Katelyn shifted in her seat, ignoring the lingering dread of thoughts that raced through her head,

“I know, can we not talk about that right now?”

“Okay…well I do need some sisterly advice.”

“What did you do now?” Katelyn asked, noticing Nicole’s sad attempt of hiding her embarrassment behind her water bottle,

“About a week ago, I was helping Billy close up the parlor…”

“Continue…”

“We were; you know? Goofing around and I maybe, kinda, kissed him…”

Katelyn choked back on her water as her sister’s words crept into her ears,

“I’m sorry, what?”

Nicole’s increasingly reddening cheeks shocking Katelyn more so,

“Right? That’s what I’m saying. Katelyn, I’m not going to lie…”

“Please do…”

Nicole laughed, waving Katelyn’s subtle demand away,

“Is it bad that I don’t feel bad? Honestly, he’s such a great guy and so sweet and God, not to mention an amazing kisser.”

“Okay enough… Billy is like a brother to me, it just got weird.”

“Katelyn, I really…really like him and I don’t know what to do. I still have Peter trying to call me fifty times a night, pleading with me to take him back...but Billy is just…Ugh, I haven’t liked someone like this in forever.”

Katelyn released a sympathetic smile, she could see all over her sister’s face that she genuinely cared for Billy, and all jokes aside, they would make a cute couple. If anyone was going to tame the wild Nicole Jensen, she didn’t doubt it would be him,

“I think you need to talk to Billy and see if he feels the same way and if he does then go for it. Fuck that asshole Peter. You know how we all feel about him…he might have gotten away with what he did to Christine, but he’ll never live it down here…ever.”

Nicole nodded, “Oh, I know. I can’t even stomach him, but he just doesn’t seem to be getting the hint. I think you’re right. I think I’ll talk to Billy at my party next weekend, I’ll sure as hell need some Dutch courage, especially if he completely rejects the idea…oh God…”

“Why are you even answering that asshole’s calls and texts Nicole? Sami will go through the roof if she finds out, and Billy’s a smart man, I’m pretty sure he knows a good thing when it’s right in front of him,” replied Katelyn.

“Well you see…I maybe divulged your kiss with Sami to him--” Katelyn interrupted her,

“Nicole please tell me you’re fucking joking with me right now?” Her heart began racing.

Nicole dropped her stare. “I wish I was…so I’ve kind of just been talking a little here and there in hopes he doesn’t try to blackmail me with it.”

Katelyn held her stomach tightly. “Oh God, I think I’m going to puke.”

Nicole walked to her placing her hand on her shoulder. “I won’t let that happen Katelyn.”

Katelyn looked up at her. “Nicole…this is all I fucking need.”

“I wish I had never told you…Katelyn I’ve got this…stop worrying.”

“This is Peter we’re talking about Nicole. He will sink to his lowest form if it means getting back at Sami…please.”

“I just need to get this talk with Billy over with and I’ll deal with Peter…then we can all live happily ever after.”

Katelyn laughed lightly, “If Billy feels the same and you both start dating, how do you think Peter is going to react? He’s not going to go quietly.”

Nicole sighed. “I haven’t thought ahead that far…I’ll figure it out, I promise.”

“That envelope just became more enticing.”

“Don’t even think about it…” Nicole paused looking at her watch, “I better get back to the salon, I’ll call Zack for you and make sure the three of them are still coming. After all it would be a shame for Jordan to do all of that cooking and no one show up…absolute shame.” Katelyn arched her brow toward her sister’s clear sarcasm,

“Be nice, she’s been really great the last few days…”

“Uh-huh, I can’t make any promises. I don’t trust she’s doing it to just be your friend.”

“Oh, stop. She is being a truly good friend, give her a chance already.” Katelyn’s small demand pushed a grin from Nicole,

“Yeah, yeah.”

Chapter 51

"Jordan will you just relax, they are too laid back to care about appetizers, have some wine they’ll be here soon." Katelyn said calmly, placing a glass of wine into a visibly nervous Jordan’s hand.

"I just want it to be perfect, there’s nothing wrong with that and I’m pretty sure your parents are expecting something rather extravagant," said Jordan as she sat down on Katelyn’s contemporary Italian beige sofa.

"No, there is nothing wrong with wanting it to be perfect, but they’re not a picky group, give them beer and pizza and they’re happy, and as for my parents it isn't like they are going to the Wallace."

Katelyn sat down next to her placing her glass on the brand-new solid oak coffee table. A small smile placed across Jordan’s face as she rested her hand on Katelyn’s thigh,

"Do you think after they leave…" Jordan paused, "Do you think I could stay tonight?" She finished quickly before taking a long sip of wine,

Katelyn looked over biting the inside of her cheek a silence filling the room,

"I…I…"

Jordan interrupted a stuttering Katelyn, placing her palm across Katelyn’s warm cheek her eyes brushing back and forth between Katelyn’s,

"It's an innocent question...I just want to keep you company, that's all." Jordan flashed a soft smile.

Katelyn sighed as she reached for the soft hand that rested against her cheek. How could she tell her she really wasn’t in the mood for company…? Her company anyway. She had been so great and a rock throughout the whole move, but she knew Jordan was possibly wanting more from her… And that was something she couldn’t for the life of her muster up,

"Jordan…you will want more and…" Katelyn paused struggling to find the right words,

"I’m not asking for a relationship Katelyn. I’m asking you can I stay with you tonight…why won't you let me in? I’m right here knocking, please."

Jordan’s kind blues burned into Katelyn, "Please Jordan, not this again."

"Katelyn, I'll never deny that I want more than a friendship. I thought taking you up to Cedar Peak under the stars, after our dinner at the Wallace for your birthday…would’ve grabbed your attention. You admitted it was romantic…" Jordan paused, bringing her face closer to Katelyn’s, “You nearly kissed me…you nearly let me in.” Jordan’s soft whisper forced Katelyn to break their stare.

She swallowed hard remembering that night under the stars with the woman in front of her. It was a very romantic birthday gesture. Jordan was saying and doing all the right things, she could never deny it. But there was the stigma of Sami. Everything Jordan did and said… It was Sami. A part of her even ached to kiss Jordan, just to imagine it was Sami, stopping herself of course realizing the unintentional turmoil it would cause,

Katelyn sighed lightly, "Jordan…I don’t want you to get hurt and that is exactly what is going to happen, why won’t you listen to me?" Katelyn asked, almost pleaded as she reached for her wineglass.

Jordan let out an amused laugh dropping her hand from Katelyn’s cheek,

"What’s so funny?" A confused Katelyn asked looking up at a chuckling Jordan,

"Katelyn, we have fun together. Give me a chance to open you up to the idea of maybe seeing me as more of a friend perhaps. You keep me at arm’s length, let me get a little closer let me show you it might not be so bad."

"Jordan, I don't--" Suddenly the door buzzer interrupted her, "That will be them."

Quickly she got up placing her glass back down on the table, thankful to be taken away from the uncomfortable conversation.

Katelyn opened the door to let the noisy guests in. Surprised to see her parents giggling with the rest of them. Nicole placed two bottles of champagne in Katelyn’s hands before kissing her on the cheek,

"Here you go sis…" Nicole walked into Katelyn’s new apartment, the glow from the simulated fire sending waves of orange and red across the room as if dancing, warming her instantly,

"I love what you’ve done with the place, Katie," explained Nicole taking off her coat, and giving it to Jordan before placing a brief kiss on her cheek.

Katelyn smiled as everyone entered, hugging and kissing them on the cheeks, her eyes soon fastening onto Sami,

"Hi,” Katelyn whispered as Sami brushed past her,

“Hey…the place looks good,” stated Sami as she took off her jacket,

Katelyn dropped her stare, closing the door behind Sami. Yes, Sami wasn’t acting herself. That warm melting smile never followed her cordial hello. Katelyn took in a deep breath and decided to say nothing. It wasn’t the time. Deep down she hoped that as everyone got comfortable Sami would open up… Talk to her, do something.

Zack walked into the open planned kitchen and began rustling through the drawers, Katelyn walked in behind him dangling a bottle opener in front of him,

"I already had it out on the coffee table," Katelyn said with a smile.

Zack rolled his eyes before laughing,

"Thanks sis, you know us too well," he replied before snatching it from her grip.

Arthur sat down in the comfortable beige chair next to the fireplace, his eyes studying his daughter's new apartment. He smiled toward Gwen giving her his instant approval of the place,

"I like what you did with the place, Katelyn. You very much have your mother’s tastes in decorating."

Katelyn smiled before handing her father a glass of whiskey on the rocks, and thanking him,

"It is very beautiful, darling. I especially love the black and white lily paintings above your fire place," added Gwen.

Katelyn smiled as her parents complimented her new home. Her heart filling as she watched Sami sit down next to Gwen on the sofa and place a soft kiss against her mother’s cheek,

"Oh, my lovely Sami," Gwen explained as her smile grew, gently she patted Sami on the cheek.

"How's the parlor and that hand doing Sam?" Arthur asked, swishing his ice to listen to it clink against his glass.

Sami nodded, "It couldn't be better. Busy, but good. I'm surprised you and Mrs. J haven't made your bookings yet," she replied.

Gwen lightly tapped Sami’s arm shaking her head as Arthur matched his wife's laughter. He raised his glass before pointing a finger at Sami, his eyebrows raised,

"Nice try."

"Katelyn was telling us about a possible tattoo convention that might be coming to town," stated Gwen.

Sami nodded, "Yes, nothing is set in stone and it won't be until next year but the meeting went really good, and if McCluskey…which I’m not gonna hold my breath…gives them the thumbs up it will be some good revenue...of course not that East Pines needs it but, we have a lot of kids in town who love to ink they just don't have the opportunity, and Zack and I…we really don't have the time right now to train. But this convention could really help them with an opportunity to apprentice with other tattooist's around the country."

"I certainly see your point, Sam. Let me talk to McCluskey, I'm not making any promises but let me see what I can do," stated Arthur before taking a sip of his whiskey.

"You don't have to; I wasn't giving you a pitch..."

Arthur laughed, "Well, you made some valid points, Sam. We have too many young people in this town with no hopes for a future because we simply don't offer a lot of opportunities for those who want to be in the arts of say tattooing. So, you've convinced me...I like your ideas, so I'm going to help."

Katelyn smiled at her mother as the two of them listened to the conversation, her heart filling as she watched her father listen and want to help Sami's efforts in giving the younger mischievous crowd of East Pines an opportunity to be successful at something that didn't involve needing college.

Sami slapped her palms on her thighs before getting up as Jordan sat down to join them,

"All I can say is thank you, it would be a great help. Now if you would excuse me, I'm going to go make sure the kids are playing nice," Sami winked before getting up and leaving them to join the others on the porch.

Arthur grinned at Sami, enjoying her humor,

"She's funny, I'll give her that."

Arthur looked up at Katelyn as she chewed the inside of her cheek. She caught her father's questionable stare. The last thing she had ever expected was her father to accept the love he knew they both possessed for one another and now he was willing to help her. It was never anything she could have ever imagined happening.

Katelyn placed the last plate in the dish washer, sighing lightly she leaned her back against the counter, and grabbing her wine, she watched on as everyone sat in her living room laughing and rubbing their stomachs. Dinner was a success, every plate practically licked clean. As happy as she was about the triumphant house warming, her head was still filled with Sami’s quietness toward her. At the table, she didn’t join into much of the conversations. She couldn’t shake the feeling that it was the last place Sami wanted to be. Had she met someone on her trip? Katelyn took a long sip of her wine, trying to swallow the sudden ache from her continuing thoughts. She silently watched Sami excusing herself from the group, before opening the French doors and disappearing out onto the porch. Katelyn quickly shoved the inside of her cheek between her teeth debating whether she should even attempt talking to her to find out what was going on. Did she want to know? Yes…

Katelyn quietly closed the French doors, leaving the laughter and conversation behind her, and letting her eyes rest on Sami who gazed out over the tree tops, blowing out rings of smoke,

“Hey, you,” Katelyn said softly.

Sami turned looking over her shoulder, the small forced smile not going unnoticed by an approaching Katelyn,

“Hey, you should go back inside. It’s a little cold out here,” stated Sami, moving her hood over her head and turning back to the tree tops,

“I’m fine,” Katelyn whispered, crossing her arms as the goosebumps from the chill settled against the fine hairs on her arms,

“Are you okay? You’ve been a little quiet tonight.”

Sami nodded, “I’m good.”

Katelyn rolled her eyes, Sami’s shortness was certainly triggering a quickly forming irritation,

“Tell me what’s wrong…I’m not stupid Sam.”

Sami turned to her, Katelyn examined the darkened eyes as they disappeared behind the subtle shadows from the night sky,

“Like I said, I’m good.”

Katelyn sighed, God she was so stubborn,

“Okay, if you say so…I never got to say thank you for my birthday gifts…the donut was delicious by the way” stated Katelyn,

“Good, I’m glad you enjoyed it.” Sami pushed off the railing, putting her cigarette out in the small bucket of sand next to her, “I’m going to go back inside,” her low tone triggering Katelyn to grab her forearm, stopping her in her tracks,

“Okay, enough. Tell me what the hell is wrong. I need to know Sam.”

“No, you don’t. This is my issue that I’m dealing with, drop it,” pleaded Sami, lowering her hood.

“We both know I won’t. What is the issue? Did I do something? Has something happened that I need to know about?”

She watched Sami stare at the ground beneath them as her jaw clenched. She knew something was eating her up inside she just wished she would come out with it already,

“The day I brought you your gifts, why did you lie to me and tell me you were having lunch with your father, when it was Jordan…”

“Wh…what are you talking about? I would never lie to you, especially when it comes to Jordan, I have absolutely no reason to.” Katelyn’s confusion caused Sami’s eyes to narrow,

“I’m not an idiot Katelyn, I saw her in the lobby when I was leaving. She had lunch in her hand, telling me about her plans for your birthday…telling me…never mind. It’s none of my business.”

“I never had plans with her for lunch, and when she came to my office I told her I couldn’t, and I didn’t…Jesus, I thought you knew me better than that,” Katelyn replied, dropping her clutch from Sami’s forearm, before crossing her arms as the crisp air pierced her skin again.

“Here.” Katelyn looked up to Sami holding out her hoodie. Slowly she took it to wrap over her shoulders, “Thank you,” she whispered softly.

“She’s a great catch…I would understand. You aren’t tied down; you have every right to…enjoy her company. I just…right before I left you told me we needed to talk…I instantly assumed it was to tell me about you and Jordan becoming a thing.”

Katelyn threw her head back, “Do I enjoy her company? Yes. Is she a catch? Yes. But she’s not the one I ache for…the talk…has absolutely nothing to do with her…but I do need to discuss something with you, right now just isn’t the best of times.” Katelyn took in a deep breath,

“This is killing me, Katelyn…” Sami whispered,

“Trust, it’s killing me too,” she replied,

“I can endure the occasional get-together, but I can’t listen to someone tell me how they’re going to pursue you. Not right now.”

“I’m sorry, Sam…”

“If you and Jordan decide to be a thing, just don’t let me endure being in the same company for a while,”

Katelyn shook her head, “We will never be a thing, Sam…my heart doesn’t want her.” Katelyn bit the inside of her cheek, “Come back inside, we can cuddle on the couch.”

Sami’s laughter joined Katelyn’s. She knew without fail Sami would appreciate her small inappropriate humor. Katelyn didn’t know or care to even think about how the two of them were going to try and keep the wanted friendship and continue to hide how they felt from everyone, especially her brother and not act on it. That was the real challenge.

Chapter 52

“Nicole, where do you want this? There’s no room on the dining table,” Katelyn asked holding a large plate of deviled eggs,

“Oh, just put them on the coffee table, I didn’t realize I had so much food.”

“We could feed the whole town with this,” Katelyn replied bending down and settling the plate between the two-large bowls of chips.

Putting her hands on her hips, she let out a breathless sigh. She had been working all day alongside Jordan, Peter and Billy to help Nicole get her apartment ready for her annual thanksgiving eve party.

“You’re looking a little blue there, Bill, you hanging in okay?” She asked him as he finally got done blowing up the countless number of orange, yellow, and red balloons,

“I’ll be fine once Sami arrives with my whiskey and smokes.”

Katelyn laughed shaking her head, her eyes scanning the fall decorated room. She loved fall, the orange, red and brown colors always warmed her inside, not to mention it was pumpkin spice season. Zack called it a sickness, which always amused her.

“How is it Zack and Sami managed to get out of helping today but I didn’t?” Asked Billy as he snatched a deviled egg before popping it in his mouth,

“Please, those two would have locked themselves in my room with the food and called it a day,” replied Nicole, adding more vodka to her homemade punch.

Katelyn ran her fingers through her hair just as there was a knock on the door. Jordan moved past her to open it, “Ah, look who came…just as everything got done,” Nicole announced as Zack, Tara, Sami and Donna entered, all holding bottles of whiskey and wine, a have fun gift from Mick’s stash.

“Our timing is pretty damn impeccable, if I do say so myself,” replied Zack,

“Have you been drinking?” Katelyn asked noticing her brother’s unsteady stature,

“Relax, we got a cab here. Mick poured us some shots…then some more…”

Katelyn slapped her brother’s arm before embracing her best friend and Donna.

Sami pushed her back up against the kitchen door, swiftly trying to avoid the whole, already being tipsy conversation, unfortunately her hopes were dashed when she was met with Nicole’s arched eyebrow,

“Not so slick there, Bucko, I caught you,” stated Nicole as Sami put an already half drank bottle of whiskey on the counter, her small smile causing Nicole to smack her arm before placing a kiss on her cheek,

“How’re you feeling?” Nicole asked, as Katelyn walked in, having already been updated by Katelyn of her last conversation with Sami,

“All the better for seeing you,” Sami joked,

“Real smooth…” Nicole laughed, before throwing a potato chip at her.

“Katie come test this punch…too much vodka?”

“Impossible,” stated Sami.

Katelyn rolled her eyes before choking on the sudden burn that hit her throat,

“Good God…”

Sami laughed before walking over and taking a sip. Katelyn couldn’t stop the sudden giggle as Sami’s eyes widened, her face turning red, trying to hold back the burning cough,

“Uh-huh…That’s gonna hurt in the morning,” stated Sami before kissing Nicole on the cheek and leaving the two women in the kitchen.

Katelyn grabbed the gifted bottles, placing them in the fridge before being met by her sister’s suspicious expression,

“What?” Katelyn asked,

“You okay? You both kinda didn’t say a whole lot to each other.”

“I’m fine. We have an understanding…” Katelyn shrugged off her sister’s instant disapproval that masked her face. Maybe trying to ignore each other wasn’t the best tactic, but for now, it was all they had.

“Have you made a decision…on that thing?” Nicole whispered,

“Not yet…”

“That’s a good thing, right?”

“Please drop it, Nicole. Let’s not ruin a perfectly good evening…”

Katelyn sat on the couch, with Jordan next to her, Sami had taken up one of the recliner seats with Tara sitting on the carpet between her legs. Both Donna and Zack laid on their sides, perched on elbows in front of the fire as the other guests gathered in the dining area and the porch, the condo was certainly full but there was enough space to with-stand even a small concert. After all, it was a Jensen who owned it. Katelyn sat sipping the organ burning punch Nicole begged her to take, hoping it would lure the other guests into trying it. The night was still young but there was certainly a buzz in the air. Most of Nicole’s clients from the salon took up the large space alongside a few of Zack and Sami’s friends from the skate park, everyone was having a good time. Katelyn was surprised that only after a few hours the food was nearly scarce but glad that everyone enjoyed their hard work. She took another burning sip of the punch before resting it on the coffee table,

“You’re a trooper, I’ll give you that,” stated Sami, before sipping her whiskey.

Katelyn scrunched her nose before grabbing the glass of wine Jordan had brought to her not long ago. She couldn’t ignore the subtle massaging fingers of Tara as they lightly traced the calves of Sami. All night she had been noticing their closeness, Tara hadn’t left much of Sami’s side. But still she continued to shake off her jealousy and attempt to enjoy the conversations around her.

“So, I have to ask…” Katelyn looked at Jordan as she sat forward, directing her comment to the oblivious Sami and Tara,

“What’s the deal with you both? Are you guys in a relationship…or…is this a casual thing?”

Tara laughed lightly, “It’s a no strings kind of thing, that’s all…”

"I’m sorry for just coming out with it like that, I have a hard time understanding no strings. So, when you feel like it you just hook up?" A curious Jordan asked oblivious to Sami’s uncomfortable squirming.

"Basically," replied Tara, before laying her head back, meeting Sami’s empty stare.

Katelyn watched Sami avoid eye contact with everyone present, Jordan was asking all the questions she once asked herself, but it didn’t mean she wanted to try to understand it right at that moment. She knew they hadn’t slept together in quite some time… Sami said as much. Katelyn was perfectly content with not knowing or even caring to hear about their no-strings arrangement.

"What if one of you develop feelings?" Asked Jordan pouring more wine into Katelyn’s glass,

"I don't think this is a conversa--" Sami was quickly interrupted by Tara,

"Feelings have developed but you ignore them,” Tara paused, shrugging and taking another sip of her vodka orange, “You can’t stop yourself from feeling something for someone you’ve grown close to, but I’m certainly not going to get mad at her if she goes with another woman, I know what I signed up for," replied Tara before clearing her throat.

A stunned Sami and Katelyn stared toward Tara,

"Wait, what?" Asked Sami

Tara's admittance took Sami by surprise, Tara hadn’t even attempted "the talk" like the others always had.

Tara laughed lightly as she shrugged, turning herself to face Sami and resting an elbow on top of Sami’s thigh,

"What? Oh, come on I’m only human Sami, you can’t say you’re that surprised? Don’t worry I’m not asking for a relationship for crying out loud."

Sami sat there at a loss for words as Tara explained how she thoroughly enjoyed being with her and the last thing she wanted was for Sami to stop the arrangement. Katelyn sank back into the couch cushions, right at that moment wishing they would just swallow her up, clearly taken aback by Tara’s admittance, she too didn’t realize feelings had developed. She knew her best friend liked her but to say actual feelings? She hadn't spoken of such things to her, she was her best friend, she was the one Tara would always run to talk about someone who she was beginning to have feelings for... As a matter of fact, Tara had never even tried divulging into any kind of conversation about Sami to her.

Katelyn grabbed her wine making sure to swallow generous amounts before softly clearing her throat,

"You have feelings for her?" Katelyn asked, pressing the glass against her cheek, as a knot tightened in her stomach,

"I do, but they're nothing." Tara turned back to Sami, "They're nothing."

"Usually you would tell me about...that stuff," Katelyn said quietly as she fought the throbbing guilt in her throat.

"Please, you nearly freaked out when you found out I was sleeping with a woman, I dared to think how you would react if I told you I had feelings for one."

“Tara…I…I told you, if feelings…started, this had to stop…” Sami sat up, rubbing the back of her neck letting how uncomfortable she felt visible to everyone. Sami soon wished she hadn’t waited for Terri’s seductive ways to work for her arrangement with Tara to end.

"What did you expect exactly? People aren't robots. They have feelings...this isn’t your first rodeo," Katelyn stated, her tone sharp.

The pained expression in Katelyn’s eyes became quite evident to everyone as the room silenced. She couldn't sit there and say nothing. Since she had known Sami, she scorned her about the way she conducted herself around town and not only had it bitten Sami in the ass once again, it involved her... Her heart.

Sami swallowed hard, having to listen and witness the shear hurt that moved across the coffee table, gutting her

"I... I thought it would be different..."

“Sami, I’m telling you like I always have…this is different. Please don’t stop this…you’re just scared, and I get it, I know you more than you know,” pleaded Tara, raising herself onto her knees to face a now highly uncomfortable Sami,

Sami moved her empty stare to Katelyn’s injured one, she dropped her head before meeting Tara’s hopeful expression, “Tara, I’ll never feel what you need me to,”

"How can you even say that? When we slept together last week the passion behind it was undeniable, Sam…I know you felt it too, please don’t run from it,”

Sami dropped her head in her hand, her thumb and fingers squeezing her temples as Tara’s unknown confession escaped,

"You guys slept together…last week?" Katelyn asked painfully, her eyes filling.

Sami clenched her jaw as she locked on to Katelyn’s hurt gaze, for the first time she witnessed the woman’s soul crush right before her very eyes.

Katelyn bit onto her lip swallowing back her tears, she thought her assumptions of Sami were wrong, she began letting the woman in, she finally let her desires fuel her want and need for the tattooist. She had finally let her guard down and believed Sami mirrored her unsaid love. To hear that she continued to sleep with her best friend, even after everything was the final straw. Her heart suddenly hardened as her dwindling desire fueled nothing but a growing anger. She felt like such a fool and to have to sit there with everyone and not reach across Jordan and slap Sami, sickened her,

"Katelyn... I can expl--"

“If you guys would excuse me, I need the ladies room and we certainly need some more wine,” explained Katelyn.

She got up quietly before gulping the remains of her wine, fighting with her filter. As much as she wanted to scream at Sami... Spit a fire of the turmoil Sami had just placed inside her it wasn't the time or the place to do so.

Sami looked over at the concerned ridden expression all over Donna’s face, her widened eyes telling Sami to follow Katelyn into the kitchen as soon as the opportunity aroused. Her breaths were staggered. She moved her stare back to a clueless Tara,

“We should talk about this later…now just isn’t the time…” Tara dropped her gaze, nodding lightly.

Katelyn quickly dried her hands making sure to avoid her reflection in the mirror, fearing if she witnessed her hurt, she would be unable to control the looming tears. Pushing past a few of the guests, she flung the kitchen door open, making a bee line for the fridge, if she ever needed wine, the time was certainly now. Snatching the bottle from the fridge she pulled the cork, before pouring herself a generous amount. No gulp big enough seemed to dwindle the fiery hurt in her chest, she put the glass down on the counter in front of her, before clasping the edges trying to drown out the images of Sami and Tara, sleeping together. How could you have been such a fool? Suddenly a soft voice behind her forced her to turn,

“Kate…please let me explain.”

As her eyes met the sorrowful darks of Sami, the already built inferno spread like wild fire,

“Get out…I don’t want to hear a damn thing you have to say,” she demanded, turning her back to Sami, she downed the remains in her glass before pouring some more,

“I’m not leaving until you hear me out…” Said Sami, before slowly making her way to Katelyn.

Katelyn turned, her eyes widening as Sami was right there, inches away,

“I told you, I don’t want to hear anything you have to say. You played me like a fool, I truly believed that you might actually…,” Katelyn paused, taking in a deep breath, “Just go, Sam.” Suddenly she felt Sam’s hands lightly clasp her arms, as the luring darks dueled to meet her stare. Never had she witnessed such desperation in Sami’s eyes,

“This happened when I thought you lied to me about lunch with Jordan. She had all these things planned for you…you…we both agreed nothing could ever happen between us. Damn it Kate I was hurt!”

“You were hurt, so you decided to jump into bed with…her!” Katelyn let out a small laughter, her frustration peaking. She looked over her shoulder making sure the music was loud enough to drown her out, before turning back to Sami, and pointing her finger brashly at the sorrowful face in front of her,

“I would never dream of lying to you, especially knowing how you felt about Jordan…I had every opportunity in the world to sleep with her, she was very tempting,” Katelyn stopped as Sami released her grip, her eyes almost hardening. Sami had once again hurt her. Just as she had finally let her in, the hurt recurred more than she could take. Katelyn closed her eyes slowly as the pain in her chest intensified,

“But I didn’t, because regardless if I couldn’t be with you, I knew that if I had slept with her, her touch would have been me fantasizing that it was yours…then I would have to live with you finding out. That of course being when I thought you felt the same…this only proves you do not and I thank you for that…”

Sami’s eyes narrowed, “Thank me?”

Katelyn nodded slowly, “I thank you for bringing me back to the reality that you are Sami Wilson…and you always will be. There will never be a future for us…I can never…never…trust you.”

Sami’s mouth fell open as her heart throbbed a rush of air from her, her gaze lowered as Katelyn’s words crept into her ears… Right at that moment she knew Katelyn was back to running, this time unsure if she would ever be able to catch her. Katelyn’s hurt had surfaced, and Sami’s chest pounded against her pain. She clenched her teeth together trying to hold her hurt from escaping off her tongue,

“Kate…” Sami was abruptly interrupted by yelling in the next room. Katelyn’s eyes moved to the door before the two walked out and into Peter grabbing Billy by the throat.

Katelyn moved her hand to her mouth as Sami rushed past the dining table to her friend’s aid, pulling a clearly enraged Peter from Billy and slamming him against the wall, her forearm crushing his throat,

“Get off me!” he spat.

“I’m going to kill that sniveling fuck! Who let this bitch in anyway?” Yelled Billy as he tried to push past Zack who too had him pinned,

“Are you seriously going to cheat on me with that fucking Junkie?” Peter grimaced as Sami pushed her forearm harder against his throat.

Katelyn closed her eyes, before she knew it Sami’s fist quickly connected with Peter’s jaw sending him to the ground. She ran to Sami pulling her away from him. He looked up at them both, as his blood moved through his fingers,

“Peter, I’m sorry you had to find out like this….” Explained an already traumatic Nicole.

While using all of her strength as she tried to keep Sami from Peter, Katelyn turned to her distraught sister, “Jesus Christ, what the hell just happened?”

“Decided I would crash the party…then I caught your whore of a sister kissing that son of a bitch on the patio!” Peter hissed, as a few of the guests helped him back on his feet. Katelyn turned to look at him, the sight of his misshapen nose amusing her, but she dared show it,

“Okay, I think we need to call it a night. Jordan can you escort Peter out, please,” She paused, looking at Sami who stood against the force of her palms, waiting for Peter to hiss another comment about her friend. She swallowed hard to Sami’s hellacious anger as it radiated through her daring stare toward Peter. She thanked God Sami wasn’t pushing her strength against her now burning arms.

“Zack, go clean Sam up and for the love of God check she hasn’t damaged that hand again.” Insisted Nicole.

“Let me get this straight, you’re actually contemplating on leaving me for this piece of shit? Me? Peter McCluskey?” he asked, before snatching the wet rag handed to him by Tara.

Katelyn turned to watch Nicole clutch onto Billy’s forearm, “Fuck you, Peter! It’s been over since we found out you were the one who kill—” She stopped herself before looking in Sami’s direction.

“How many times do I have to say this? I was fucking framed. This is fucking hilarious, have you lost your fucking mind? He is a piece of shit who is going nowhere, you see this right?”

“This bitch…” spat Sami. Her jolt being prevented by Katelyn’s hold,

“Sam don’t…” Katelyn turned back to Peter, “Peter, you need to leave. Jordan…please get him out of here,” She insisted, once again.

Peter released a laughter, pulling from Jordan’s reaching hands, instantly causing Katelyn to feel a knot tighten inside as the sinister tone behind his laugh hit her,

“I’m going nowhere, the fun has only just begun,” he paused, intentionally throwing his underhanded grin toward Katelyn and Sami, “I have nothing to lose anymore… Zack…”

Katelyn’s eyes widened as her heart jumped into her throat,

"Oh my God...you wouldn’t," she pleaded.

Peter looked toward Katelyn, his grin grew, "I'm sorry but I have to do this," He paused staring back at Sami,

“You have to do what exactly?” Sami hissed.

Peter’s sinister laughter quickly filled the room, slowly he shrugged, turning to Zack who stood between him and Billy,

“Zack, I’m sorry that I have to be the one to tell you this…” Katelyn quickly interrupted him, clutching his arm, her eyes already filling with panicked tears, “Please Peter…”

“None of this is your fault Katelyn, it’s hers.” He nodded toward Sami. “She preys on women…your brother has a right to know what a piece of shit his so-called best friend is.”

Katelyn watched his bold wink as he brought his thumb to her cheek. Abruptly she slapped his hand away.

“What the hell are you talking about?” Zack asked,

“Don’t listen Zack, he’s full of sh--” Peter’s laughter interrupted Nicole.

Sami scrunched her brows together, oblivious to it all. Her eyes darting between them all.

“Sorry Zack, oh and Tara you might like to hear this too. Our good old Sami here,” he paused as Katelyn’s grip tightened against him, “Sorry Katie baby…”

Katelyn knew there was nothing she could do but clamp her eyes shut,

“I think it’s only right you know that…Sami went against your wishes and your friendship…” He turned to look at Sami, tilting his head, “I mean…how could you go behind your best friends back and kiss Katelyn?” he finished, taking in a deep breath before puffing out his chest almost pride-like.

Sami watched Katelyn’s unsteady hand rush to her mouth as tears finally fell, then to Zack, his punctured expression forcing her to drop her head.

"You kissed her?" Tara whispered.

Katelyn reached for Tara's hands, "Tara, I am so sorry. I didn't know you had feelings. Please believe me," she pleaded,

Tara pulled away from Katelyn, pressing her teeth against her bottom lip as Sami looked over her shoulder at her,

"Tara..." She said softly,

"I have to go."

Sami grabbed Tara's arm, but brashly she pulled it away from the gentle hold,

"All you had to do was tell me." Tara whispered.

Katelyn rushed, following Tara as she grabbed her coat and hurried to the door,

"Please stay Tara, we can't leave it like this..."

Tara turned to a shattered Katelyn before placing her thumb to her best friend’s cheek to wipe away her tears. Katelyn could see her best friend forcing to hold in her own,

"I love you Katelyn but right now...I... I, have to go, I’m sorry."

Tara opened the door before slamming it shut. Katelyn spread her palms against the door, unable to prevent the painful sobbing that pursued,

"You son of a bitch, you couldn’t just keep that fat hole in your face shut, huh?" Nicole screamed as she moved from a speechless Billy to a visibly devastated Katelyn who crumbled into Nicole’s hold.

Zack cleared his throat turning to a silent Sami, "Sam, tell me…just tell me this is just a big fucking joke.”

Sami closed her eyes before opening them to meet his, "I'm sorry Zack. When I say--"

"After everything, how could you!" Zack glared toward Nicole, "And how could you keep this from me? I guess I was the joke in all of this huh?" His voice raising.

"That couldn't be farther from the truth, Zack," replied Sami, her bloodshot eyes visible to everyone in the room,

"You shut your damn mouth. I trusted you and you go and do the one damn thing I asked you not to do!" He yelled slamming his fist against the wall beside him.

“I need you to hear me out for a minute, let me exp…”

“I trusted you! You were like a brother to me! You were supposed to be the one fucking person to never hurt me…” Interrupted Zack, quickly wiping the fast falling tears from his cheeks,

Katelyn looked at her brother through her tear shielded eyes, his noticeable heart ache piercing her more than she ever expected,

"Zack, I swear to you, it was a mistake...it happened one time. That was it, we never slept together, please believe me. We never told you because we didn't want to hurt you over a stupid mistake...."

Sami clenched her jaw fighting back the forming lump in her throat as Katelyn's words of denial and regret passed through her ears. Zack held up his hand, pinching the bridge of his nose with the other before moving his toughened stare back to Sami,

"Wait, wait," he paused letting out a frustrated laughter, "She's...Katelyn's the woman you were telling me about at the bar, wasn't she?"

Sami nodded slowly as a tear finally fell against her cheek,

Zack swallowed hard, "She was supposed to be the one..." he paused his whisper, before looking back to her, "Of all the women in this world--"

Sami raised her hand indicating for him to stop, her pained eyes forcing him to drop his glare,

"Everything I told you Zack, it was all true."

Donna moved to her sister, “I think we should go,” she said quietly, pressing her hand against Sami’s back.

Katelyn moved to her brother pressing her palm against his trembling arm, and placing a finger on the side if his cheek forcing him to look at her,

"Zack, it was a mistake. We were both drunk, she didn't...we both didn't mean for it to happen."

He narrowed his eyes at his sisters desperately pained stare, "A mistake? Jesus Christ Katelyn...if you only knew--"

Zack looked toward Sami as her desperate and pleaded stare interrupted him. Shaking his head realizing again, her true feelings.

Katelyn moved away from her brother. Her trembling causing her to fall back onto the dining chair. Never had she felt so much hurt, anger and guilt at any one given time. Shaking her head, she felt Jordan squeeze her hand. She looked over at the surprisingly understanding woman as she presented Katelyn with a sympathetic smile. Katelyn took in a staggered breath trying desperately to calm the tears,

"Donna is right, I think you need to leave, Sam…" Said Katelyn sharply.

"Katelyn, what are you doing?" Nicole pleaded.

Katelyn could see the worry in her sister’s eyes, she knew Nicole knew how much she loved Sami, the side effects, the aching. But her brother’s hurt right at that moment affected her more, not to mention of her hearing about Sami’s escapade with Tara the week prior.

Sami’s demeanor instantly weakened against Donna; she had finally been broken. She couldn’t take any of it anymore, and pushing Donna from her she shoved the chair in front of her aside. Slamming her palms against the dining table, she leaned down to the woman who refused to meet her gaze, their faces just inches from one another. Donna tried one last time to pull Sami back, but the snapped arm forced her to step back,

"I can't do this anymore. I have already lost my best friend and now you, there is nothing else for me to lose. I've had to stand here and endure listening to you lying to everyone, telling them our kiss was a mistake. I’m not going to leave here without letting you know one last God damn time…it was never a mistake,” she paused, moving her tired gaze to Zack’s tempered glare, “It was never a mistake to me…never not once, and I know I made an oath to you…but I’m sorry, I don’t regret that kiss…I regret the consequence. You have to believe me that every day, I hated myself…but I had no control over this one,” Sami took in a deep breath, moving her desperate stare back to Katelyn, almost forcing their eyes to duel, “But, keep lying and denying your heart, Princess let me know how that works out for you," spat Sami as she flipped a bowl off the table. Jordan swiftly grabbed Sami’s shoulder forcibly pushing her from Katelyn.

An enraged warmth soon swarmed Katelyn and before she knew it, she kicked her seat back, raising to face Sami. Without any warning she pulled her hand back before giving the side of Sami’s face a forceful slap, the sound ringing through everybody’s ears.

"Get out!" Katelyn screamed slamming her palms against the dining table.

Sami dropped their gaze, clasping her eyes shut as the building sting from the woman's slap set in before staring back at Katelyn. Donna reached for her,

"Let’s go," Donna said sternly.

Sami turned to Zack one last time as her tears failed to balance against her lashes, “I’m sorry…I never meant for you to find out like this,” she whispered before dropping her gaze and finally doing as Donna had instructed and left.

Katelyn pressed her hands against the table as tears fell. She couldn’t believe Sami had done that in front of everyone. The truth of their kiss was finally out. Her brother's trust for them both... Broken, just like that. The shock had set in as her tender palm throbbed against the edge of the table.

Nicole looked back at Zack, as everyone began leaving behind Donna and Sami.

"Can you help Jordan clean up or something?" Demanded Nicole as she tried to soothe her sister’s pained sobs before turning to Peter as he sat back in the dining chair, looking very proud of himself,

"And you…get the fuck out of my life and don’t let me ever catch you near any of us ever again, you sack of shit!"

He threw his hands up showing an act of innocence,

"I think it is only right you all know what kind of person Sami really is."

Katelyn pulled from her sister's grasp before lunging toward him swiftly sending another forceful slap across Peter's face,

"You son of a bitch!"

Peter held his cheek before raising from his chair, “Well then, I guess that’s my que to get out of here."

Before another word could be said Billy shot up throwing his arm back and punching Peter in the face, “That was For Sami,” he swung again, “That was for me,” then swinging one more time, “And that was for Christine.”  Peter fell back onto the floor, after the last. Billy bent down, holding Peter’s bloodied jaw, he spat in his face, “Let me catch you in the streets, bitch…” Billy warned. With that Billy grabbed him by the collar and speedily threw him out.

Zack walked over to a bent over Katelyn pushing himself between her and Jordan, he pressed his finger under her chin to raise her eyes to his.

“Katie…” His soft whisper instigating Katelyn to burrow her tear shielded face into his chest. A relief washing over her as he placed a soft kiss on the top of her head,

“I’m so sorry, Zack.”

“Katie…do you love her?”

His daunting question forcing her to raise her eyes to his, it was too much to try and hide her pain,

“I don’t want to Zack, but I promise I will push it away…I swear to you,” Katelyn watched his stare turn into a pained one, her heart once again shattering,

“In my life, I’ve never seen you react the way you did tonight. You both pushed your happiness to keep mine…”

Katelyn shook her head, the last thing she ever wanted was for her brother to turn this around and blame himself. As far as she was concerned it was her and Sami who broke his trust, crossed a line that should have never been thought of, he of all people didn’t deserve that.

“Zack, we fucked up. There is no excuse for what we did, please don’t put what we did on yourself.”

Zack stood up as he ran his fingers through his now disheveled hair, his eyes being met by Nicole’s soft stare,

“What can I do to fix this, Nicole? She’s completely shattered…”

Nicole pressed her palm against his five o’clock shadow, “Only they can fix this, and I have a bad feeling…they won’t. Right now, I think you need to go see your best friend, whatever happened, happened. Just know they both fought their feelings for you. Regardless of what you might think right now, she is still a good, loyal friend."

Chapter 53

Sami sat on her coffee table wincing as Donna placed a bag of ice against her tender cheek accompanied by a sly grin,

"Just like old times, huh?" said Donna taking a seat on the recliner opposite Sami,

"Damn that woman can hit," replied Sami,

"Harder than Nicole?" Donna asked playfully, "I’m kidding, but you have to realize Sam, what’s on your cheek right now is months of pent up frustration. Why on earth did you sleep with Tara, I thought you were going to break that arrangement up?"

"I've been busy with everything...we were drinking and it...just happened." Sami lifted the bag of her ice from her cheek, rubbing her tongue against the inside of her cheek, "Damn..."

Donna's eyes widened to Sami as the forceful thuds against the front door rang in their ears. Sami sighed closing her eyes as she prepared herself for round two. She got up from the chair resting her palm on her sister's shoulder, she squeezed it softly before opening the door. Sami dropped the ice pack from her face as Zack pushed passed her, his body still trembling. Donna stood up noticing his reddened eyes, she looked toward Sami worry washing over her wondering if he would go as far as to hit her sister.

Sami threw the ice pack on the breakfast bar behind her, her deflation numbing her from everything. Zack turned to her sharply, his hands on his waist as his teeth traced back and forth over his quivering bottom lip. Sami watched him fight the urge to let her see his hurt as his tears balanced,

"You love..." he paused clearing his throat. "You love my sister?"

Sami clenched her jaw swallowing hard, before taking in a deep breath,

"You have to believe me, I didn't plan any of this, I tried not to,"

"You and I both know she wouldn't throw a friendship like the one you both have away just to get a woman into bed, don't we?" Donna asked.

Zack turned to her with a clenched jaw,

"I'm trying so damn hard to justify my best friend crossing the very line I asked her not to, Donna."

Donna moved closer to him before grabbing his forearm, her soft eyes visibly penetrating his angered exterior as his glare weakened,

"I think love is a very good reasoning, don't you?" she whispered.

"Zack hit me, do whatever it is you need to do. My track record isn't so good right now but I can promise you whatever love I hold for your sister I will never act on it, I don't want to lose you, I'll do whatever you need me to do…to have my brother back," Sami paused, rubbing the back of her neck, "I fucked up, I weakened...It happened one time…it won't happen again I need you to believe me."

The sudden dry laughter that filled the room from Zack pushed a beaten sigh from Sami,

"Hitting you won't heal Katelyn's pain. Thanks to you, Nicole is trying to comfort my shattering sister. Yeah, I'm pissed you broke our oath...but you didn't break it for a one-night stand, it was for love." He sighed heavily, "I'm pissed you couldn't grow a pair and tell me, your best friend. You need to fix this Sam, and from what I saw, I don’t even think God himself can fix her,"

"After tonight Zack I'm pretty sure Katelyn is never going to speak--"

Sami was interrupted by a sudden knock at the door, the three of them looked at one another as Donna got up to see who was joining them for the Sami shit show. Opening it she was quickly pushed to the side as an irate Katelyn stormed in brashly motioning toward Sami not even aware of her brother even being in the room.

Katelyn’s burning glare watched as Sami quickly backed away, holding her hands out to prevent her from getting any closer. Katelyn’s heart pounded a rage in her chest like she had never experienced, Sami had hurt her for the last time. She hated Sami for being so easy to fall for, for making her so powerless to the side effects… All she wanted to do was put her hands on her and make her feel the unruly hurt Sami had caused her to feel. Suddenly she felt a hard tug, she turned to Zack pulling her to him as Donna wedged herself in-between the two women,

"Who the hell do you think you are!" Screamed an infuriated Katelyn.

"All right, before we even do this you need to calm down," explained Sami,

"Calm down?" Katelyn paused as a fire driven laughter escaped, "Are you kidding me! After everything you have done? The fucking side effects of you caused me to hurt my brother…you made me believe you actually felt the same way…and then to top it all off, you fucking slept with Tara after...you son of a bitch--"

Sami interrupted,

"Jesus Katelyn, I didn’t make you do a damn thing, and as far as I knew we could never be together...I could never have you how I hunger to have you. I shouldn't have slept with her but if I knew in my heart that there would have even been a slither of hope I could have you…you have to believe me I wouldn't have done what I did."

Katelyn snapped her arm from her brother’s grip to point her finger in Sami's face, ignoring Donna's hand as it pushed against her chest preventing her from getting closer,

"I'm not a fool! You are Sami Wilson, you're everything your reputation perceives you to be and the fact I even listened to you and let you in... hung on your every word and stare--"

"Katelyn, all of those stolen gazes that would flip, turn us both upside down, electrified touches weren't all in your head. I tried so hard to let you see I’m not the person you think I am and I tried to break down those God damn walls that my reputation built and finally I did, you let me in. You let the real me in, you looked beyond everything I had done in my life before East Pines and during East Pines...and then...tonight happened,"

"Oh, you mean you had me right where you wanted me, right where every fucking woman in this town has been. You nearly got the forbidden fruit...that was until I found out, not even a week ago after everything between us, you spent a passion fueled night with my best friend," snapped Katelyn, her stomach stricken with nausea.

"Fuck, I know what I did but Katelyn...every touch, Jesus it was all you--."

Sami’s words didn’t ease Katelyn, all they did was turn her jealousy into a fury,

"Please spare us the details thanks. All I need from you is to leave me alone, I never want to see your face again," snapped Katelyn.

"You know you don't mean that..."

"I broke off my engagement, I was trying to move on, but I couldn’t, you wouldn’t let me. You kept reeling me in…you…you…" She paused, breathless, "I am no different from the other women, I fell into your trap, and the worst part is…I possibly fell even harder than they did..."

"Katelyn…you couldn't be any more different...you got my heart the moment my eyes fell on you at The Wallace...I tried to figure out what the fuck was wrong me…It didn’t take long for me to realize I was falling harder than I ever thought imag--"

Katelyn pressed her finger hard against Sami’s lips to prevent her from finishing as she shook her head,

"Don’t…I can’t hear you say it…. I need you to not say it…"

Sami placed her hand on Katelyn’s lowering it from her lips,

"Katelyn…I love you," whispered Sami as she tightened her grip on Katelyn’s hand,

Katelyn let out a small gasp as she heard the words she had starved but dreaded to hear seeping from Sami’s lips. Her heart fluttered before pounding against her chest, she was completely weakened again. She shook her head, as much as she yearned to hear those three words… She couldn’t trust them; they had been tainted.

Katelyn pulled away to grip her fingers through her hair, she bit hard onto her lip as Sami’s dark eyes presented a tearful desperation,

“I’m moving to Boston…” She whispered, her admittance forcing her eyes to shut as the reality of her decision filled the room.

Sami swallowed hard, her weakened blink releasing a small tear, “What...where did that come from?”

Katelyn kept her eyes clamped shut to Sami’s winded question before opening them to a visibly winded Zack as he collapsed on the arm of the recliner behind him,

“I got a job offer for a firm out there. I’ve been contemplating it…” Katelyn paused as her eyes filled once again, “A part of me didn’t want to leave you…but I knew we could never be together, it seemed like the only way out of this mess we created…”

“But Katie…she loves you, that’s all I would have needed to know for you both to have my blessing…you can both fix this and finally be together…”

Zack’s plea caused Katelyn’s lip to quiver forcing her to bite down on it, his pain almost killing her,

“I’m sorry Zack, I’ve made my decision. I…”

Sami’s soft grip against her elbows interrupted her,

“Kate…don’t leave because of this, I fucked up…I…Jesus as far as I knew we would never be together…” Pleaded Sami, her injured expression pinning Katelyn,

“Sam, stop. I can’t do this with you anymore. As much as I knew I could never be with you…sleeping with Jordan didn’t even come into play. I just couldn’t stomach the mere thought of it…but you, you laid Tara in your bed…you touched her…you kis…” Katelyn dropped her pained stare, even speaking the words sickened her, “You knew I’d find out, she is my best friend, and still…that didn’t stop you…I’m done, Sam…”

Sami dropped her grip from Katelyn, her blood shot eyes moved to her best friend, his punctured demeanor instantly forcing more tears to fall. Katelyn’s browns had a darkness in them Sami had never seen before, she knew right at that moment she had shattered the beautiful soul in front of her and there was no taking it back, she had hurt the woman for the last time,

“I’m sorry Zack…I’m…” He raised his hand up signaling to Sami that he didn’t want to hear what she had to say as tears fell down his five o’clock shadow.

“Zack, please don’t blame her or yourself for this…I need this…I…need this.”

Katelyn glanced as Sami stepped back, she witnessed the complete devastation move across the face she ached for. She watched Sami lazily rest her hands on her waist as Donna approached to hold her sister. Right then the gravity of Sami’s love dawned on her, but she doubted it was even an ounce of the love she felt. Sami Wilson was just too much of a gamble… Too dangerous.

“When are you leaving? Does mom and dad even know about this?” Zack asked softly,

Katelyn nodded slowly, “Yes, they’re aware, of course they both tried to talk me out of it…I’m going to book my flight for the day after tomorrow, they agreed that they would take care of my apartment for me, empty it…whatever, if I chose to take the job. It’ll be good for me, not to mention my career, I have a very good chance of becoming a partner at this firm--”

“You can have all of that here, and more,”

“No, Zack. I can’t. I’ll always be daddy’s girl to them. I’ll be a named partner because dad owes the firm… to others anyway.”

“Fuck them snobs, who gives a fuck what they think? You know you’re a damn good attorney, all of the associates know how damn good you are. Jesus, you and Richard are about to make Junior Partners, Katelyn.” snapped Zack,

“I need to prove it to myself and being in dad’s firm isn’t going to help me see my worth.”

She looked at Sami who still stood in silence, “Sam….”

Sami shoved her tongue into her cheek, refusing to meet the eyes that captured her from day one, she cleared her throat,

“Is there anything I can say that will make you rethink this? Your family just got you back. I’ll stay out of the way. You won’t have to see or talk to me again…don’t leave them because of me.”

“It’s not all because of you, I mean it helped my decision but, Boston is a huge opportunity for my career…I want to go, even before tonight…I wanted it,” replied Katelyn.

Sami raised her hurt and tired eyes to Katelyn’s punctured ones, she said nothing but sent a slow nod Katelyn’s way,

“Katelyn can’t you just…okay she fucked up! You both love each other; did she sleep with someone? Sure…But, okay Boston is a great opportunity for you but…like she said, I just got you back, we all just got you back,” a desperate Zack rushed.

Sami cleared her throat, lifting her head in the air to prevent more tears from falling, she rested her pain on him,

“Let her go, Zack…”

Quickly he shot up throwing his arms in the air,

“Are you for real right now? Sami, she’s leaving…the one fucking woman you fell in love with and you’re just going to let her go! What the fuck is that?”

“Zack…she’s doing what I need her to do…she’s doing it for me…this whole thing has brought us to our knees, we both need this,” explained Katelyn as she walked to him, pressing her palm against his cheek. She briefly watched tears balance against his lashes, forcing her to swallow her hurt.

“I think it’s best I go now…” Katelyn looked toward Donna who returned her sympathetic smile before taking her into her arms,

“Please take care of her,” Katelyn whispered as she tightened their hold.

Donna nodded slowly. Katelyn could see she struggled to keep strong for her sister. She broke their hug, dropping her head when she noticed Sami almost refusing to look at her. She sighed heavily, as Zack grabbed the door handle,

“Kate…” Sami whispered.

Katelyn paused in her tracks at the trembling hurt voice that pierced her ears, she turned to the broken women behind her, as much as she wanted to go to her and hold her and tell her they could fix it and live happily ever after, Sami had hurt her to a point she could have never fathomed…she needed her space to finally heal from the wounds of Sami Wilson. Slowly she walked toward her, intertwining the fingers her body still ached for, she studied the dark eyes that caught her heart from the very beginning, for the last time,

“This might not have been exactly how we thought it would end but…I hope you can one day love again…I know it doesn’t feel like it, but love doesn’t always have to end in heart ache…I’ll always…” Sami’s clenched jaw and falling tears forced Katelyn to pause. The lump in her throat forming once again.

“Bye Sam.”
