We are proud to have witnessed the growth of what was a new art form in the almost decade since we began. We have 10 volunteers who work on the site in various areas – each donating many hours of their time in order to keep it running smoothly. Some of the volunteers have thousands of hours of work invested and freely given, myself included. So why am I stating what most of you know? Recently, one writer was alerted to the possibility that another used some of her ideas and her words and passed them off as her own. It appeared that the two individuals involved dealt with this on their own and decided how to proceed. But that didn't settle the issue for some people. We were drawn into the controversy, even though the people involved had settled it. Many people asked for and some demanded that we make this issue public and name names, etc. The tone of many of these e-mails was harsh and, in some cases, abusive. Some were supportive and for those, I deeply thank you. For the others, well, I simply am saddened at the tone. That people were demanding we kowtow to their side (and this really was on each end of it) without doing an investigation is amazing. There was only one person out of all the emails we received, or were forwarded to me from other lists, who took up my request to help. Thank you for that. The e-mails came to many of us at our personal e-mail addresses, and some of them were very personal. Some of the exchanges got heated. These were all from people who were not involved in the situation - just people who heard about the issue and came to give us their point of view and dammit, their point of view was the only one that was right. As I stated before, we're volunteers who do this for the community of lesbian fiction readers and writers. We have always tried to be fair when issues like this come up. It has only happened a handful of times, but each time takes a toll on us, especially when you consider how strident some of the notes can be. When things like this happen it makes each of us question whether the hours we spend maintaining the site are spent wisely. The stand for our site is to continue to investigate charges. We will not change the way we do things. We are proud of our unbiased and fair procedure which, to this point, had been unwritten. What we’ve gotten out of this is it’s obvious that we must have the policy posted so people know what steps will be taken. I will get a couple of our volunteers to work on a protocol that protect BOTH sides until there is compelling evidence. And for the people calling for a “stance” on plagiarism from The Academy of Bards? I would seriously hope it’s a no-brainer that we do not support, agree with, promote nor encourage plagiarism. However, we do support and agree with the idea of fairness and the concept of innocence until proven guilty.
